I definitely feel less stressed, though I do sometimes wonder if I’m missing an important email when I’m out and about. Maybe a few more weeks and this residual anxiety will go away…

Jennifer,
thank you for this post! I feel totally reassured in my decision to turn off my data from my blackberry since late March.
I have done it originally for traveling reasons internationally where I didn’t want to have roaming charges, but realized that I can continue living without the email service since I’ve been back to New York really well! I have realized that I’m less stressed out as a result and quality of life has improved a lot. Emails can wait until I get to the computer and if sth is urgent, I can be called.

I had a bit of anxiety that first day, but I must say that this weekend was absolutely glorious without the BlackBerry! I got to truly relax and focus on enjoying time with my mother-in-law, who was in town for a visit.

This is an interesting issue as more and more companies are targeting mobile marketing – especially to teenagers. Now that facebook, twitter, and e-mails (and blog) can be used from phones, the ability to conduct business (or pleasure related mobile usage) is easily accessible, and in some cases, I’m sure, mandatory.

I wonder how businesses will be affected if people turned off that feature or not use phones that have those features.

Any withdrawal symptoms yet? I think you should go for another walk without your blackberry and see if you notice a difference. I usually bring a sketchbook — it is really amazing how much more closely you look at leaves and acorns and flower buds if you try to draw them — and leave my phone at the bottom of my purse.

My cell phone is a dinosaur (5 years old!) and doesn’t hold a charge well any more. Either it’s on silent or it’s dead, and either way, I end up calling people back at the end of the day. It’s more answering machine than phone, and apart from the occasional emergency, I prefer not to be available at someone else’s whim. I think my mother may be on to something by refusing to get a mobile at all!

Thanks for this blog post Jen! While I’m not willing to give up my iphone (in fact, I only recently got it), I do appreciate a reminder to stop and smell the roses in the real world. This afternoon I was checking my email and reading an article while walking my dog. It was such a pretty day and rather than soak in the sun and watch my cute dog, my face was glued to my phone. This post hit close to home. Happy Earth Day!
