It is (or at least used to be) more common in northern climates, where native inhabitants in the middle of winter can't find anything else to eat but rabbits for months at a time. It is also associated with Windigo's appearing in your hut and eating you alive! Dun dun duuuun (again)!! Beware rabbit meat for it is too lean! Well, don’t really beware, but if it’s all you’re eating you can have Rabbit Starvation! Dun dun duuuuun!
